In China, landscape has never been merely the nature we see.

For centuries, Chinese artists have looked to landscape as a way of understanding the world and expressing the self. Mountains, trees, clouds, and water have carried reflections on our relationship with nature, with time, and with our inner lives.

After a century of profound change, Chinese artists continue to explore how this distinctive way of seeing and expressing the world can remain alive within contemporary life and experience.

Landscape Within is the inaugural exhibition of Unique East Art, and our response to this enduring question.

The artists in this exhibition do not seek to reproduce the forms of traditional Chinese landscape painting. They live and work in the world of today—a world shaped by rapid change, urban environments, technological disruption, and the loneliness, anxiety, disconnection, and search for self that often accompany them.

We call this exhibition Landscape Within because these works allow us to encounter not only the natural world, but also each artist’s understanding of our time. Through their own distinct visual languages, they each create a landscape that exists within.

As the world continues to change and the current of our time carries us forward, artists continue to hold on to the landscapes within.
