Xianyun
Xianyun (Liu Hongxia), born in Baoding, Hebei, in 1975. She currently lives in Beijing.
Xianyun is a contemporary Chinese ink artist whose practice transforms the language of traditional landscape painting into a reflection on modern life.
Her works bring mountains, waves, fish, birds, and solitary boats into tension with walls, corridors, and geometric architectural structures. The fluidity of ink confronts the rigidity of constructed space, creating a visual dialogue between nature and human order, freedom and confinement, movement and stillness.
Xianyun graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at Hebei Normal University and completed advanced studies at the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts from 2006 to 2008. With more than three decades of experience in art practice and education, she is grounded in the discipline of traditional Chinese painting while continually extending its expressive possibilities.
Through bold brushwork, expansive washes, and restrained touches of color, Xianyun does not simply depict the natural world. She uses it to reveal an inner landscape shaped by struggle, resilience, solitude, and the enduring desire for freedom.
